Raymond 'R-Collection' Chardonnay, Monterey 2005

The Raymonds are long standing California winegrowers, virtually becoming synonymous with the Napa Valley wine trade. Roy Raymond Sr. worked for three decades with the Beringers and actually married one of Jacob Beringer's granddaughters. Roy Sr., along with his two sons, Roy Jr. and Walt, formed Raymond Vineyard in 1971. They started by making a wide variety of wines with grapes sourced primarily from the valley. In 1989 the family sold a controlling interest to Japan's Kirin Brewing Inc. with the Raymond family retaining control as managing partner.

The line-up is now segmented into 4 tiers: Amberhill (the largest volume), Napa Valley Reserve, Limited Edition Wines, and the R-Collection. We really love the R-Collection Chardonnay as it represents the style of Chardonnay that we would love to see coming out of California. I must admit that the tipping point from a score of Three-Stars to Four-Stars is this wine's tremendous price. Kudos again.

Tasting Note:
Brilliant pale gold color. The nose is amazingly complex and pure perfectly marrying aromas of tropical fruit with pear, citrus and a hint of oak. The flavors are equally intriguing balancing sweet ripe fruit with tart green apple notes. Ideally balanced showcasing a velvet like texture accented with crisp, natural acidity. An incredibly versatile wine that belong s on your table or enjoyed as an aperitif. $13
