The Beverage of the Week
BOW for the Week of: October 24 to October 30, 2007   |  Last Week   |  The Archives
Blue Ice Vodka, USA

Vodka; it’s clear, neutral, and virtually everywhere. With so many labels how is one supposed to sort the gems from the rubbish?

I can start by telling you what I look for in Vodka. First, Vodka is a delicate and perhaps a finicky elixir. By its nature, it stands before you, or lies in the glass if you prefer, naked, without the addition of flavors, or wood aging that are so necessary for many Spirits. With Vodka, every blemish is visible, although this does not stop some brands from attempting to hide their dust bunnies under the sofa. Vodka should taste, and smell, pure.

Second, Vodka should be sensibly priced. Sure there are plenty of brands that are happy to have some pay for their fancy billboards: I’m not one of them. Seek pleasure and quality, not status!

This week’s Beverage of the Week fits the bill, and then some. Blue Ice Vodka from Idaho, made with 100% Idaho Russet potatoes. It’s a damn fine Spirit and priced to be your everyday Vodka. Top shelf quality offered at a sensible price; Blue Ice should be in your drinks cabinet. (Be sure to see the feature we did on Blue Ice in the Third Quarter issue of The Aperitif.)

Tasting Note:
The nose is clean while expressive with a pleasing floral note and complimenting minerality. The palate is rich and semi-viscous while being crisp and clean. It finishes with a firm pepper bite with a healthy dose of citrus zest. Very versatile making a great Vodka Martini or blend it with your favorite mixer. $20
